MARK SEDGWICK

Mark Sedgwick is Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark. He received his Ph.D. in history at the University of Bergen, Norway, where he worked on the history of Sufism in the pre-modern and early modern periods, and taught for almost twenty years at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. His research focuses Sufism in the Muslim world and the West, with an emphasis on the period after 1800. He also works on terrorism, Islam in Europe, and other topics. He recently edited Making European Muslims: Religious Socialization among Young Muslims in Scandinavia and Western Europe (Routledge, 2014). His research on Sufism has resulted in many articles and several books, including Sufism and the West (Oxford, forthcoming 2016), Saints and Sons: The Making and Remaking of the Rashidi Ahmadi Sufi Order, 1799-2000 (Brill, 2005), Against the Modern World: Traditionalism and the Secret Intellectual History of the Twentieth Century (Oxford, 2004) and Sufism: The Essentials (American University in Cairo Press, 2000). He is currently working on a project on multiple maternities in the Muslim world.
